IESOL/Nová Maturita Mock Exam 2010

A new concept of school leaving exam is to be implemented as of the new school year 2010/2011. Regarding the English language students who are currently in the third year will take the exam at two levels according to the CEFR: B1 and B2.

Therefore, City & Guilds representatives in the Czech Republic prepared a pilot project called IESOL/Nová Maturita Mock Exam 2010 in which 35 secondary schools from the whole Czech Republic were registered and approximately 2 100 students tested between January to May. The tested students were given a chance to find whether they are at B1, B2 level according to the European standards and took IESOL Achiever and Communicator written exam consisting of three exam parts: Listening, Reading and Writing. Furthermore, most students could take an international exam for the first time albeit a mock version.

The tests were assessed by independent assessors who provided the teachers and students with detailed and structured feedback on their performance. Moreover, the assessor of the free writing part prepared a list of common mistakes that appeared in their students' work for each school.

The students who received the First Class Pass (FCP), the name list below, at both levels got a small prize.

To sum up, City & Guilds representatives received positive feedback from the teachers and schools on the organization of the project and the quality and speed of delivering results.

We hope students and their teachers can benefit from the provided feedback and experience.

Based on their results, 32 students then advanced to the final rounds where their language competences in writing and speaking tasks were assessed by the panels of one examiner and two assessors. The Interlocutors were native-speakers of English who have had significant experience with ISESOL examining. The testing materials were chosen from the authentic City & Guilds IESOL and ISESOL examinations on the respective levels.

Friendship Competition 2005

During the past school year through the pages of Friendship magazine we had a chance to introduce our City & Guilds Pitman Qualifications ESOL exams to thousands of students all over Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Friendship is an English language magazine published in Slovakia and the Czech Republic for students who study English. There is a permanent section about the ’Maturita’ in order to help students in the preparation for the school-leaving exam. In this section of the magazine we have had the opportunity to publish a series of articles about City & Guilds Pitman Qualifications ESOL and SESOL examinations during the last academic year. Students could also take part in a competition; we encouraged them to fill in different ESOL/SESOL tests and return them to us. Those who have sent back the completed tests had a chance to win a free language exam.
The lucky winners who can take a City & Guilds Pitman Qualifications ESOL / SESOL exam FOR FREE are the following:

The Czech Republic

  • Petra Pejchová from Melník
  • Jarmila Strosová from Brandýs nad Labem
  • Petra Mončeková from Doudleby n. Orlicí
